Some things to consider
- In all major cities of the world visitors have to make some precautions, if they want to enjoy their holiday. Unfortunately Budapest is not an exemption either.
- When changing money always look around, as there are major differences between the offered rates. Never change money in the street!
- In Hungary the official mean of payment is the Forint but Euro is accepted in many places.
- Check the menu and prices of the restaurants before you enter, especially at "tourist areas".
- Taking an official taxi company can also save you a lot of money. Be careful at the airport and train stations.
- From the airport to the city unfortunately there is no underground or train connection. There are 3 ways to get to the center: by public transport (airport bus and blue line of the underground) or by airport minibus service (shuttle service for appr. 10 EUR/person) or by taxi (major differences in rates!).
- In Budapest there are 3 underground lines, they meet at the Deák square.
- You need a single ticket to use underground, bus or tram. The controllers don't have a sense of humour.
- It worth buying a daily or 3 days ticket, if you plan to use public transport.
- Tickets are sold at news agent's and underground stations.
- Opening times: food stores usually from 7am to 8pm, on Saturday from 7am to 2pm, other shops from 10am to 6pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. The shopping malls are open from 10am to 8pm every day.
- The prices are below the European average but quality has a price in Budapest too! Never buy things, which are suspiciously cheap.
- Among the many sights, maybe the evening panorama of the Danube bank is the most beautiful. Don't miss it! It belongs to the Unesco World Heritage sites.
- It is also worth trying a Spa (eg. Gellért, Széchenyi, Rudas or Lukács).
- Budapest is famous for the cafés as well, there are many to choose from.
